Prevent Child Abuse Coweta

History

Prevent Child Abuse Coweta was formed in October of 2001 by the unanamous vote of over 120 community leaders.  Just like in church, the hat was passed where $182 was collected and designated for use in filing organizational paperwork and obtaining a 501(c)3 status.  The meeting was called by Alliance for Children's Enrichment (ACE), which is the State of Georgia designated family connection collaborative in Coweta County.

The first purposes of PCAC was to educate the community on child abuse issues, including but not limited to the prevention of child abuse through proven programs.  The Board of Directors of ACE served as PCAC's Board of Directors until thier own was established and they could operate independently in 2002.  ACE also supported all financial obligations of the organization until they began operating independently.

In April of 2002, PCAC held its first Pinwheel Project in April during Child Abuse Prevention month.  Businesses and individuals sponsored pinwheels, which were placed on the lawn of the Charles Wadsworth Auditorium on Jefferson Street in downtown Newnan.  That first year, 649 pinwheels were used to represent every child that was abused or seriously neglected in Coweta County the previous year.  Speaking at the kick-off event were elected officials from the United States Congress, State of Georgia Legislature, County Commissioners and the Mayor.  They each pleged to work toward eliminating child abuse throughout the county and state.
